Temperance campaigning and alcohol consumption: a case study from pre-confederation Canada

ABSTRACT: Prohibitionists claimed that outlawing alcohol was the only way to maintain sobriety in society. An examination of early-19th-century Canada shows that the real decline in drunkenness occurred well before the prohibitionists launched their campaign.
